Gerald’s Game

Gerald’s Game is a gripping psychological thriller that delves into the dark corners of trauma, survival, and the human psyche. Based on the Stephen King novel, the film follows Jessie Burlingame (Carla Gugino), who, after being handcuffed to a bed during a failed attempt at rekindling her marriage with her husband Gerald (Bruce Greenwood), is left to confront a series of horrifying challenges after his sudden death. Trapped, vulnerable, and with no one around to help, Jessie must summon the strength to face her own inner demons, while struggling to survive.

This film takes a unique approach to the thriller genre, blending intense physical survival with an exploration of psychological trauma. Jessie is forced to confront not only her physical restraints but also the emotional scars of her past. As she battles for her life, memories of past abuse, guilt, and shame resurface, creating a narrative that is both chilling and deeply emotional. The tension grows as Jessie faces terrifying hallucinations, making the viewer question what’s real and what’s a product of her fractured mind. The film’s slow-burn suspense keeps you on edge as Jessie fights against time, and herself.

Carla Gugino delivers a powerful performance, capturing the full emotional range of a woman in extreme distress and fear. The film’s direction by Mike Flanagan (known for The Haunting of Hill House) skillfully creates an intimate and suffocating atmosphere, making the small, confined space of the bedroom feel like a labyrinth of terror. The use of claustrophobic shots and sound design intensifies the isolation Jessie feels, immersing the audience in her struggle.
