Butcher’s Crossing (2022)

Starring: Nicolas Cage, Fred Hechinger, Xander Berkeley
Directed by: Gabe Polsky
In the unforgiving American frontier of the 1870s, young intellectual Will Andrews (Fred Hechinger) abandons Harvard and the comforts of civilization in search of something real, raw, and untainted. His path leads him to the harsh, dust-choked town of Butcher’s Crossing, where idealism quickly meets brutality.

There, he falls under the spell of enigmatic buffalo hunter Miller (Nicolas Cage), a man obsessed with finding a hidden valley said to be overflowing with untouched herds. Lured by the promise of adventure and fortune, Will joins Miller’s expedition into the remote Colorado wilderness — a journey that will soon descend into madness.

Facing brutal weather, dwindling supplies, and the psychological toll of slaughtering thousands of buffalo, the group spirals into desperation. As nature closes in and the line between man and monster fades, Will must confront not only the wild but the darkness that lives within ambition and obsession.

Butcher’s Crossing is a haunting, slow-burning Western that strips away the myths of the frontier, exposing the cost of conquest and the fragility of the human spirit.
