Plot:
Raya and the Last Dragon 2 (2025) picks up several years after the events of the first film. The Kingdom of Kumandra has been united, and Raya (voiced by Kelly Marie Tran) has successfully brought peace to her land after the defeat of the Drunn, the dark, evil forces that once threatened to destroy the world. With the help of the last remaining dragon, Sisu (voiced by Awkwafina), and her friends from the different tribes of Kumandra, Raya has worked hard to maintain harmony between the once-divided kingdoms. But just as it seems peace has finally been restored, a new threat arises from the shadows.
The story begins with Kumandra enjoying a golden age of prosperity, with trade, culture, and knowledge flowing freely between the five tribes. Raya has become the protector of the Dragon Gem, the powerful artifact that holds the essence of the dragon Sisu and the key to Kumandra’s balance. She works closely with her allies, including Boon (voiced by Benjamin Bratt), the former thief-turned-ally, and Namaari (voiced by Gemma Chan), the princess of Fang, to maintain unity.
However, a new and mysterious enemy emerges, threatening the fragile peace of Kumandra. A rogue group of shadowy sorcerers, known as the Zura (played by a group of antagonistic characters), has begun to stir unrest by manipulating ancient magic that taps into the darkest corners of the dragon’s power. These sorcerers, led by the mysterious and dangerous Korben (played by Donnie Yen), a long-lost relative of Sisu, claim to possess the secret knowledge of the dragons’ forgotten powers and seek to take control of Kumandra for their own purposes.
The film’s central conflict revolves around Raya’s quest to stop the Zura and protect the land once again, while unraveling a deeper mystery about the dragons’ true history. She embarks on a new adventure, traveling to the forgotten parts of Kumandra where dragons once lived in peace with humans, hoping to discover a lost piece of ancient dragon magic that could save the world. Alongside her friends and allies, including Sisu, Raya must learn how to channel the dragons’ true magic and gain insight into what it means to truly protect her people.
As Raya journeys deeper into the world, she uncovers a hidden truth about the dragons’ sacrifice and the true cost of their power. Meanwhile, Namaari, who has been struggling with her loyalty to her tribe and to Raya, faces a choice between her duty and her growing bond with the dragon princess. The tension between the two women, once allies and now rivals, will play a pivotal role in the story.
In the final act, Raya and Namaari must put aside their differences and team up to confront Korben and the Zura, who have stolen a part of Sisu’s essence and are threatening to unleash a new era of darkness. In an epic battle, Raya must find the strength to wield the dragon’s magic, not as a weapon, but as a means of understanding, empathy, and unity. The film ends on a hopeful note as the tribes of Kumandra, once again united, must decide how to live together and protect the world’s fragile balance in the face of both old and new challenges.
