Genre: Animation, Adventure, Family, Fantasy

Plot:

Luca 2: Beyond the Waves takes us back to the beautiful coastal town of Portorosso, where the young sea monster Luca Paguro (voiced by Jacob Tremblay) and his best friend Alberto Scorfano (voiced by Jack Dylan Grazer) are now thriving in their new lives as humans. After their adventurous summer in the first film, Luca and Alberto have embraced their human forms, blending into the community and attending school in the vibrant Italian town. Their days are filled with exploration, friendships, and learning new things about the human world.

However, their peaceful life is disrupted when they discover that there are still parts of the world that remain unexplored—beyond the safety of the shores they know. When Luca’s curiosity grows, he learns about The Beyond—a mysterious and far-off part of the ocean that holds long-forgotten secrets about their origins and the deep ocean that their species once called home. Luca and Alberto, eager to explore new territories and fueled by a thirst for adventure, embark on a journey beyond the waves, setting sail on an adventure that will take them to uncharted waters and dangerous new realms.

As they venture farther from home, they encounter new creatures, both friendly and fearsome, and discover that there are other sea monsters who have remained hidden for centuries, living in a separate world below the waves. Their journey brings them to the City of Atlantis, a lost underwater city where ancient sea monsters live in harmony, with their own customs and legends that date back thousands of years. There, Luca and Alberto meet Mira (voiced by a talented actress like Zendaya), a fierce and intelligent young sea monster who guides them through this new world and teaches them about the history of their kind.

However, things take a darker turn when they uncover a powerful threat: Vero, a rogue sea monster who once ruled Atlantis but was exiled for his destructive ambitions. Vero has returned, planning to unleash an ancient curse on both the human world and the sea, which would merge the two realms in a catastrophic event. With the future of both the human and sea monster worlds at stake, Luca, Alberto, and Mira must form an alliance with the peaceful sea creatures of Atlantis to stop Vero’s destructive plans.

Throughout the journey, Luca and Alberto will face challenges that test their friendship, bravery, and understanding of their identities. Luca, still trying to find his place in the human world, grapples with the differences between his two worlds—his life on land with friends like Giulia Marcovaldo (voiced by Emma Berman), and his bond with the sea. As they race to stop Vero, the trio must learn to embrace their true selves, no matter where they come from, and ultimately discover that the boundaries between land and sea are not as different as they thought.
