IO (2019)

In the post-apocalyptic film IO, Anthony Mackie stars as Micah, a man who embarks on a journey to find a woman named Sam (Margaret Qualley), one of the last survivors on a dying Earth. The film is set in a near future where humanity has abandoned Earth due to environmental collapse, with the remaining few left scavenging for survival. Sam, a scientist, holds out hope that Earth can still be saved, while Micah believes the only way to survive is to leave the planet for a distant space colony.
Mackie’s portrayal of Micah is stoic yet emotionally charged, offering a counterbalance to Sam’s idealism. The film is more of a quiet, meditative exploration of survival, hope, and the tension between holding on and letting go. The chemistry between Mackie and Qualley elevates the film, making their characters’ philosophical discussions about humanity’s future feel personal and urgent. While IO may lack the action typical of post-apocalyptic films, its strength lies in the performances and the emotional weight of its themes. Mackie’s presence imbues the film with a grounded sense of reality amidst its sci-fi premise.
