Death Warrant (1990)

Death Warrant (1990) is a gritty action-thriller that sees Jean-Claude Van Damme swap the ring for a prison cell in one of his more suspense-driven roles. Directed by Deran Sarafian and written by David S. Goyer (yes, the guy who’d later write Blade and Batman Begins), this film blends brutal martial arts with a murder mystery inside a corrupt prison system.
Van Damme plays Detective Louis Burke, a Canadian cop who goes undercover in a violent U.S. prison to investigate a string of inmate murders. What starts as a routine infiltration quickly spirals into chaos, with Burke discovering a twisted conspiracy involving illegal organ harvesting, corrupt officials, and a terrifying killer known only as “The Sandman.”

This movie trades some of Van Damme’s usual tournament-style fights for raw, claustrophobic prison brawls. The action is intense and gritty, with each punch feeling more personal and desperate. Van Damme still gets to show off his high kicks and signature moves, but here, the stakes feel more grounded and dangerous.
Patrick Kilpatrick is unforgettable as The Sandman—his presence is chilling, making him one of Van Damme’s most unhinged and memorable villains. The film’s dark atmosphere, tense pacing, and solid supporting cast (including Cynthia Gibb and Art LaFleur) help elevate the standard action formula.

Death Warrant doesn’t reinvent the genre, but it’s a solid, fast-paced thriller that delivers a mix of mystery, martial arts, and prison drama. It’s a must-watch for Van Damme fans looking for something darker and more story-driven.
