Section 8 (2022), directed by Christian Sesma, is a straightforward action thriller boasting a solid cast, including Ryan Kwanten, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, and Scott Adkins. Despite its strong lineup, the film struggles to rise above generic action movie tropes.
The story follows Jake Atherton (Kwanten), a former Marine suffering from personal tragedy after his family is murdered. Seeking vengeance, he lands in prison, only to be recruited by a secret government agency known as Section 8. However, as he takes on deadly missions, he soon realizes he’s just a pawn in a much larger and more sinister game.
The film delivers decent action sequences, especially with Scott Adkins and Dolph Lundgren involved, but the pacing is uneven, and the plot feels overly familiar. Ryan Kwanten does his best in the lead role, but the script doesn’t give him much depth. Mickey Rourke adds a bit of star power, though his role is limited.
While Section 8 has moments of solid action, it ultimately feels like a missed opportunity. With a better script and stronger character development, it could have been a more memorable addition to the genre. As it stands, it’s a decent but forgettable watch for hardcore action fans.
