Based on the 2000 AD comic series, Judge Dredd is a sci-fi action film starring Sylvester Stallone as the titular law enforcer in a dystopian future where Judges act as judge, jury, and executioner. The film follows Judge Dredd, a highly respected but emotionless officer, who is framed for murder and must clear his name while uncovering a sinister conspiracy led by his nemesis Rico (Armand Assante).
The movie delivers solid action sequences, impressive set designs, and a futuristic cyberpunk aesthetic. However, it strays too far from the dark and gritty tone of the original comics, opting for a more campy and exaggerated approach. One of the most controversial aspects is Stallone removing his helmet, which goes against the core mystery of the character in the comics.
Armand Assante gives an over-the-top villainous performance, while Rob Schneider as the comic relief sidekick, Fergie, feels unnecessary and out of place. The film has some fun moments, but the cheesy dialogue and uneven tone hold it back from being a truly great adaptation.
While Judge Dredd has gained a cult following over time, it is generally seen as a missed opportunity compared to the much darker and more faithful Dredd (2012) starring Karl Urban.
