Directed by Joseph Kosinski, is a visually stunning sci-fi mystery set in 2077. Earth, devastated by a war with alien “Scavengers,” is nearly abandoned, its survivors relocated to a moon of Saturn. Jack Harper (Tom Cruise), a technician, and his partner Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) oversee drones that protect resource-extraction towers from remaining threats. Jack’s routine—repairing drones while haunted by fragmented memories—unravels when he rescues Julia (Olga Kurylenko), a survivor from a crashed spaceship, who triggers revelations about his past.
As Jack questions his reality, he discovers the Scavengers are human resistance fighters led by Beech (Morgan Freeman), and the towers serve an alien AI, “Tet,” exploiting Earth. Julia, revealed as Jack’s wife from before the war, exposes that Jack and Victoria are clones programmed by Tet. Defiant, Jack allies with the resistance, sacrificing himself to destroy Tet with a nuclear payload, freeing humanity. Kosinski’s sleek direction and M83’s atmospheric score amplify the desolate, futuristic landscapes, while Cruise delivers a compelling mix of grit and vulnerability. Though predictable at times, Oblivion captivates with its twists, visuals, and existential undertones, exploring identity and resistance in a post-apocalyptic world.
