Overwhelmed with guilt and grief, Sara moves to Chicago to live with her estranged father in a predominantly Black neighborhood.
Struggling to adapt to her new environment, Sara finds solace and inspiration in her friendship with Chenille (Kerry Washington) and her growing romance with Chenilleβs brother, Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas). Derek, a gifted street dancer, introduces Sara to hip-hop culture and encourages her to blend her classical ballet training with urban dance styles. As Sara and Derek fall for each other, their relationship faces challenges from societal prejudices, cultural differences, and personal struggles.
