Anastasia (1997) is a beautifully animated musical adventure film directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. Produced by Fox Animation Studios, it reimagines the legend of Anastasia Romanov, the youngest daughter of the last Russian Tsar, Nicholas II, blending historical fiction with a touch of fantasy. The film is renowned for its stunning animation, captivating music, and heartfelt storytelling.

The story follows Anya (voiced by Meg Ryan), an orphaned young woman suffering from amnesia, who is unknowingly the lost Grand Duchess Anastasia. As rumors swirl that Anastasia survived the fall of the Romanovs, Anya is discovered by two con men, Dimitri (voiced by John Cusack) and Vladimir (voiced by Kelsey Grammer), who are seeking a reward by presenting the missing royal to her grandmother, the Dowager Empress Marie (voiced by Angela Lansbury), now living in Paris.

As Anya begins her journey to discover her identity, she grows close to Dimitri and begins to suspect that she may truly be the lost princess. Their plans are complicated by the villainous Rasputin (voiced by Christopher Lloyd), a sorcerer who cursed the Romanovs and is determined to eliminate Anastasia to complete his vengeance.

The film is brought to life by its memorable soundtrack, featuring the Academy Award-nominated song “Journey to the Past” and the hauntingly beautiful “Once Upon a December”. These songs, composed by Stephen Flaherty with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, have become iconic in the realm of animated musicals.
