I remember watching “The Ritual” (2017) during its theatrical run and being thoroughly impressed, despite not being the biggest fan of folk horror or guilt trauma subplots. This film, directed by David Bruckner, exceeded my expectations by delivering a truly unique creature that left a lasting impression.

The synopsis reads: Reuniting after the tragic death of their friend, four college friends set out to hike through the Scandinavian wilderness. A wrong turn leads them into the mysterious forests of Norse legend, where an ancient evil resides and stalks them at every turn.

David Bruckner masterfully sets the scene, creating nail-biting tension using the eerie Swedish woodland setting (though it was actually filmed in Romania). His direction effectively immerses the audience in the unsettling atmosphere, making the forest itself a menacing character. It’s no surprise that Bruckner was later offered and then directed the “Hellraiser” (2022) reboot, given his ability to craft such compelling horror.

However, the main draw of “The Ritual” is undoubtedly its distinctive creature, designed by concept artist Keith Thompson. Known as Modor, this creature is unlike anything seen before in horror cinema. Describing Modor is challenging due to its unique and unsettling appearance: it resembles a giant stag with two pairs of human arms, a headless human torso, and enormous antlers. The creature’s design is both terrifying and fascinating, adding a layer of mystique and horror that elevates the film.

The film also delves into the psychological horror of guilt and trauma, with each character grappling with their own inner demons as they face the external threat. The performances of the cast, particularly Rafe Spall as the grieving and guilt-ridden Luke, add depth to the story, making the characters’ struggles feel real and relatable.

“The Ritual” is a standout in the folk horror genre, blending psychological and supernatural elements to create a gripping and chilling experience. Its eerie atmosphere, unique creature design, and strong character development make it a must-watch for horror enthusiasts.
