Allies (2014)
Allies is primarily a World War II drama, but it incorporates science fiction themes through its exploration of advanced military technology and strategic warfare. Max Deacon plays the role of Private Tom Westfall, a young and eager soldier thrown into a high-stakes covert mission behind enemy lines. Though the film focuses on war, it offers hints of sci-fi elements, particularly in its use of innovative technologies and tactical warfare, which feel ahead of their time.
Deacon’s portrayal of Westfall is one of a man grappling with fear and responsibility. His character evolves throughout the film, reflecting the harsh realities of war and the mental toll it takes. As the squad ventures deeper into enemy territory, they face unexpected challenges, some of which border on the surreal, as they encounter technology that was unheard of during WWII. Deacon excels at showing the internal conflict of a soldier caught between duty and survival.
While Allies is more grounded in historical fact, its treatment of military technology and strategic deception gives it a futuristic edge, much like some of the best science fiction films. Deacon’s performance elevates the film, giving it a human core amid the action and intrigue.
