Halloween (1978)

Halloween (1978), directed by John Carpenter, is a landmark in the horror genre, widely regarded as one of the first and most influential slasher films. It stars Jamie Lee Curtis in her breakout role as Laurie Strode, a high school student stalked by Michael Myers, a masked killer who escapes from a mental institution and returns to his hometown to kill again. Donald Pleasence also plays Dr. Sam Loomis, Michael’s psychiatrist, who tries to stop him.

The film is known for its minimalist but highly effective suspense, its iconic score (composed by Carpenter himself), and Michael Myers’ eerie, emotionless mask. The use of long takes and a steady, creeping camera—along with the heavy breathing heard from Michael’s perspective—adds to the sense of dread throughout the film. Despite a modest budget, Halloween became a huge success and spawned numerous sequels, reboots, and imitators, helping to define the slasher genre.
