Inferno (1999)

🎬 Inferno (1999) – also released as Desert Heat
Director: John G. Avildsen (Rocky, The Karate Kid)
Starring: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Pat Morita, Danny Trejo, Gabrielle Fitzpatrick
Overview
Eddie Lomax (Van Damme) is a war veteran wandering through the desert, worn down by trauma and life’s disappointments. On the brink of giving up, his path changes when a gang of thugs beats him, steals his motorcycle, and leaves him for dead. With help from friendly local Jubal Early (Pat Morita) and some townsfolk, Eddie regains his strength and sets out for revenge—methodical, brutal, and tinged with dark humor.
Highlights
A more human Van Damme – less invincible superhero, more wounded warrior with vulnerability.
Directed by an Oscar winner – Avildsen gives a touch of old-school character drama to a revenge action film.
Pat Morita’s warm performance – a gentle counterbalance to the gritty violence.
Quirky desert-town humor – oddball side characters give the movie a strange charm.
Memorable Scenes

Eddie’s recovery montage with Jubal’s help, switching from despair to determination.
The inventive traps Eddie sets for his enemies.
The final scene where the townsfolk turn Eddie’s story into a wild “alien encounter” legend to attract tourists.
Fan Take

It’s not as action-packed as Van Damme’s peak-era hits, but it stands out for its mix of melancholy, offbeat comedy, and dusty desert revenge. Think of it as a Western wrapped in a martial arts shell.
Rating: ⭐ 6.5/10 – A slow-burn, slightly oddball entry in JCVD’s filmography, worth a watch if you like revenge tales with personality.
