TANGLED (2010)

Disney’s Tangled (2010) is a magical and refreshing take on the classic Rapunzel fairytale, infused with humor, adventure, and heart. Directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, this animated film tells the story of a spirited young princess with impossibly long hair, who, after spending her entire life locked away in a tower, embarks on a thrilling journey of self-discovery, freedom, and love.
Plot:
At its core, Tangled is a story of self-liberation and adventure. Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore) has spent her entire life locked in a remote tower, isolated from the outside world by her “mother,” the mysterious and manipulative Gothel (voiced by Donna Murphy), who claims to be protecting her. Rapunzel’s magical hair holds the secret to eternal youth, and Gothel uses this power to maintain her own beauty, keeping Rapunzel imprisoned to ensure she never leaves.
Everything changes when the charming and roguish thief Flynn Rider (voiced by Zachary Levi) stumbles into Rapunzel’s tower while on the run from royal guards. Initially, their relationship is strained, with Rapunzel desperately wanting to leave the tower and experience the world, and Flynn initially seeing her as a means to an end. However, their dynamic evolves as they form an unlikely but strong partnership, heading on an adventurous journey to the kingdom and the long-desired floating lanterns that Rapunzel has yearned to see her entire life.
As Rapunzel and Flynn grow closer, they unravel the truths about their pasts, face unexpected dangers, and ultimately discover the importance of love, freedom, and family.
Direction and Animation:
The animation in Tangled is a visual feast, with lush, colorful landscapes that breathe life into the world of the story. Disney’s switch to computer-generated imagery (CGI) for the first time in a fairytale setting was groundbreaking, and Tangled stands as one of the most visually stunning animated films of its time. The tower, the kingdom, and the vast countryside are all beautifully designed, with every frame bursting with color and detail, from the golden glow of Rapunzel’s hair to the soft lighting of the lanterns.
The scenes involving Rapunzel’s hair are particularly imaginative, as the team utilized cutting-edge technology to animate the character’s iconic, flowing locks in ways that were previously unheard of in animation. The film also makes use of dynamic camera work, particularly in action sequences, making the movie feel like an adventure from start to finish.
Voice Performances:
Mandy Moore brings an innocence and youthful energy to Rapunzel, delivering a performance that resonates with both emotional depth and comedic charm. Rapunzel’s transformation from a sheltered girl into a brave adventurer is both inspiring and heartwarming. Moore’s voice perfectly captures Rapunzel’s personality, blending sweetness with a sense of wonder and excitement.
Zachary Levi’s Flynn Rider is the perfect foil to Rapunzel’s earnestness, with his charismatic, witty, and occasionally selfish demeanor. Levi’s performance infuses Flynn with just the right amount of charm, making him a likable yet flawed hero who goes through a transformation of his own.
The supporting cast also shines, especially Donna Murphy as Gothel, who masterfully portrays the manipulative, selfish nature of the character. Gothel’s deceptively nurturing façade and obsession with keeping Rapunzel captive make her a memorable villain. The interactions between Rapunzel and Gothel add an emotional weight to the story, as the tension between the two builds throughout the film.
Music and Soundtrack:
The musical score, composed by Alan Menken, is a highlight of the film, blending whimsical and emotional themes to heighten the film’s adventure and heart. The iconic songs, including “When Will My Life Begin?” and the rousing “I See the Light,” elevate the emotional stakes of the film, with each number perfectly capturing the character’s journey and desires.
