Big (1988)

While not traditionally classified as a sci-fi film, Big (1988) contains elements of speculative fiction, particularly the supernatural wish that turns a young boy into an adult overnight. Tom Hanks plays Josh Baskin, a 13-year-old who makes a wish to be “big” and wakes up in the body of an adult. The film explores themes of identity, the transition from childhood to adulthood, and the loss of innocence, all through a speculative lens. Hanks’ portrayal of a child trapped in an adult’s body is both hilarious and heartfelt, earning him his first Oscar nomination.
The fantastical premise raises interesting questions about the nature of adulthood and what it means to grow up. Hanks strikes a perfect balance between the innocence of a child and the responsibilities of an adult, making Josh a relatable and lovable character. Though primarily a comedy, Big touches on deeper themes about the challenges of maturing, making choices, and the pressures of adulthood. Its lighthearted approach to a speculative “what if” scenario makes it a fun and thought-provoking film, even if it’s not traditional sci-fi.
