Top Gun 3 is officially in development, following the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide and became the second highest-grossing film of 2022. The sequel will see Tom Cruise reprising his iconic role as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Glen Powell and Miles Teller are also expected to return as Lt. Jake “Hangman” Seresin and Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, respectively.

The screenplay is being penned by Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick, with Joseph Kosinski likely to return as director. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the film is anticipated to explore the evolving landscape of aerial combat, potentially focusing on the integration of drone technology and the role of human pilots in modern warfare.

Production is expected to begin in 2025, aiming for a summer 2026 release. Glen Powell has indicated that he has been given a production start date, suggesting that the project is moving forward.
