Double Team (1997)

Double Team (1997)
Double Team (1997) is an action-packed, over-the-top 90s thriller directed by Tsui Hark, combining high-octane Hollywood spectacle with Hong Kong-style action flair. Starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and basketball legend Dennis Rodman, the film is a wild ride of explosions, espionage, and eccentric team-ups.
Van Damme plays Jack Quinn, a top-tier counter-terrorist agent who’s pulled out of retirement for one last mission: to track down and eliminate the dangerous arms dealer Stavros, played with delicious menace by Mickey Rourke. When the mission goes sideways, Jack is presumed dead and sent to a secret high-tech detention island called “The Colony.” Determined to rescue his kidnapped wife and unborn child, Jack escapes and joins forces with the flamboyant and gadget-savvy arms dealer Yaz (Rodman), whose fashion sense is as loud as the film’s explosive action.
The movie is a product of its time—gloriously cheesy with one-liners, slow-motion dives, and outrageous stunts. One of its most iconic (and bizarre) moments features a final showdown in the Colosseum with landmines, a tiger, and a baby trapped in a glass cage—because why not?
Rodman’s acting is wooden but entertaining in a “so bad it’s good” way, and his chemistry with Van Damme gives the film a quirky buddy-cop vibe. Rourke is menacing and intense, adding some much-needed gravitas.
While Double Team was critically panned for its absurdity, it’s become a cult favorite among action fans who appreciate its campy charm and relentless energy. It’s not a masterpiece—but it’s a guilty pleasure ride that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
