Danny the Dog (2005)

Danny the Dog (also known as Unleashed) is a gripping blend of martial arts action and emotional drama, directed by Louis Leterrier and written by Luc Besson. Jet Li stars as Danny, a man raised like a dog—trained from childhood by gangster Bart (Bob Hoskins) to be a lethal weapon. With a collar around his neck, Danny obeys like a docile pet; once it’s removed, he becomes an unstoppable fighter.
Jet Li delivers a raw and emotional performance, showcasing not just his martial arts mastery but also his acting depth. Danny is more than a killer—he’s a wounded soul, longing for freedom and humanity. The story takes a heartfelt turn when he escapes Bart’s control and is taken in by a kind blind piano tuner, Sam (Morgan Freeman), and his stepdaughter Victoria (Kerry Condon). Through music and kindness, Danny begins to rediscover his identity.
The action sequences are intense, brutal, and choreographed with a gritty realism that fits the film’s darker tone. Choreographer Yuen Woo-ping creates raw, close-quarters combat that emphasizes survival over style. But it’s the contrast between violence and tenderness that truly defines this film.

The soundtrack by Massive Attack adds a haunting atmosphere, perfectly complementing the film’s emotional beats and stark visuals.
Danny the Dog is more than a martial arts film—it’s a story about trauma, control, and redemption. Jet Li shines in one of his most complex and human roles to date.
