The Protector (2005)

The Protector (2005), also known as Tom-Yum-Goong, is a Thai martial arts action film starring Tony Jaa and directed by Prachya Pinkaew. Following the success of Ong-Bak (2003), this film solidifies Jaa as one of the best modern action stars, showcasing his incredible Muay Thai skills and breathtaking stunt work.
The story follows Kham (Jaa), a young warrior from Thailand who travels to Australia to rescue his stolen elephants, which were taken by an international smuggling ring. Along the way, he faces brutal henchmen, corrupt officials, and a deadly female assassin (played by Jing Xing).
What makes The Protector stand out is its action choreography. The highlight of the film is the legendary one-take staircase fight scene, where Jaa takes down dozens of opponents in a continuous, uncut shot. His bone-breaking combat style, including the use of Muay Boran, delivers raw, high-impact fight sequences that feel intense and real. The film also features an exciting showdown against capoeira fighter Lateef Crowder and a giant wrestler.
While the plot is simple and sometimes predictable, the jaw-dropping action and physical performance of Tony Jaa more than make up for it. If you love martial arts films with practical stunts and no CGI tricks, The Protector is a must-watch.
