Hellboy (2019)

Hellboy (2019) 🔥💀👹

The 2019 Hellboy reboot, directed by Neil Marshall and starring David Harbour as the titular character, attempts to bring a darker, bloodier take on the iconic comic book antihero. Unfortunately, despite its ambition, the film struggles to capture the magic of its predecessors.
The story follows Hellboy as he battles against the ancient sorceress Nimue, the Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich), who seeks to bring about the apocalypse. Along the way, Hellboy confronts his own identity and destiny while working with allies Alice Monaghan (Sasha Lane) and Major Ben Daimio (Daniel Dae Kim).
While the film aims for a more comic-accurate portrayal of Hellboy’s world, its execution falls flat due to a messy script, inconsistent tone, and excessive reliance on CGI. Unlike Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy films, which balanced heart, humor, and stunning visuals, this version feels chaotic and unfocused.
David Harbour delivers a decent performance as Hellboy, but the character lacks the charm and depth that Ron Perlman brought to the role. The excessive gore and over-the-top violence feel more like a distraction than an enhancement to the story. Milla Jovovich’s villainous role, while promising, lacks depth and real menace.
Despite its flaws, Hellboy (2019) does have some redeeming qualities. The creature designs and action sequences are visually engaging, and some moments stay true to the dark fantasy of the comics. However, with weak pacing and underdeveloped characters, the film ultimately fails to leave a lasting impression.
