Uncharted (2022)

Uncharted (2022) brings the beloved PlayStation game franchise to the big screen, starring Tom Holland as the daring treasure hunter Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as his mentor, Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the film delivers an action-packed adventure filled with exotic locations, thrilling set pieces, and high-flying stunts.
The movie serves as an origin story for Nate, following his journey from a street-smart bartender to a full-fledged treasure hunter. Alongside Sully, he embarks on a globe-trotting quest to uncover the lost fortune of Ferdinand Magellan while facing off against ruthless villains, including Antonio Banderas’ Moncada. Holland brings his signature charm and agility to the role, but some fans of the game may find his portrayal a bit different from the grizzled, older Nate they know. Wahlberg’s Sully also lacks the iconic mustache fans expected, but his chemistry with Holland provides humor and energy.
The action sequences, particularly the plane cargo fight inspired by Uncharted 3, are exhilarating and visually impressive. However, the film’s predictable plot and occasional lack of depth in character development prevent it from reaching the heights of classic adventure films like Indiana Jones. While it doesn’t fully capture the rich storytelling of the games, Uncharted still offers a fun, popcorn-flick experience with plenty of nods for longtime fans.
Overall, Uncharted is an entertaining but somewhat generic action-adventure film that works best if you don’t compare it too closely to the games. With a sequel teased, there’s potential for future installments to improve upon this foundation.
