G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) is a high-octane action sequel that improves on some aspects of its predecessor while still delivering explosive, over-the-top battles. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the film features a mix of returning characters and fresh faces, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Roadblock and Bruce Willis as General Joe Colton.
The plot follows the surviving members of the G.I. Joe team after they are framed and nearly wiped out by Cobra Commander’s forces. With their reputation in ruins, Roadblock, Snake Eyes (Ray Park), and a small group of allies must regroup, seek revenge, and stop Cobra’s global takeover. The film raises the stakes with nuclear threats, betrayal, and intense hand-to-hand combat sequences.
One of the highlights of Retaliation is its action choreography, particularly the mountain-cliff ninja fight featuring Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee). The film also benefits from Dwayne Johnson’s charisma and physicality, making him a great addition to the franchise. However, the decision to kill off Duke (Channing Tatum) early in the film was controversial, as it disappointed fans of the first movie.
Despite improved action and star power, the film suffers from a weak script and uneven pacing. The villainous Cobra Commander has limited screen time, and the story sometimes feels rushed. However, if you’re looking for a fun, action-packed popcorn movie, G.I. Joe: Retaliation delivers plenty of explosions, epic battles, and classic G.I. Joe nostalgia.
