Predator 2 (1990)

Predator 2 (1990), directed by Stephen Hopkins, takes the deadly alien hunter out of the jungle and into the crime-ridden streets of Los Angeles. Set in the near future of 1997, the film follows Lieutenant Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover), a tough LAPD cop who finds himself facing an even deadlier Predator amidst a violent gang war.
Unlike the first film’s jungle survival horror, Predator 2 shifts towards an urban warfare setting, offering a fresh but risky approach. The heat-soaked, chaotic city serves as an interesting new hunting ground for the Predator, but the film struggles to match the tension and simplicity of the original. Danny Glover delivers a strong performance as the no-nonsense cop, but his character lacks the raw physicality of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Dutch from the first film.
One of the movie’s biggest strengths is its expanded Predator lore. We get a deeper look at the Predator’s technology, code of honor, and hunting rituals. The introduction of multiple Predators in the final act, along with the iconic Xenomorph skull Easter egg, hints at a much larger universe. Kevin Peter Hall once again does an incredible job portraying the Predator, making it as terrifying as ever.
While Predator 2 has exciting action sequences and brutal kills, the film suffers from a messy plot, weaker supporting characters, and an over-the-top tone that sometimes borders on excessive. Despite its flaws, it remains an entertaining sci-fi action film and a worthy sequel for fans of the franchise.
