Van Helsing (2004)

Van Helsing (2004)
Stephen Sommers’ Van Helsing (2004) is a fast-paced, action-packed reimagining of the legendary vampire hunter. Starring Hugh Jackman as Gabriel Van Helsing and Kate Beckinsale as Anna Valerious, the film blends gothic horror with over-the-top action and CGI-driven spectacle.
Set in Transylvania, the story follows Van Helsing as he battles Count Dracula (Richard Roxburgh), who has a sinister plan involving Frankenstein’s monster and an army of monstrous offspring. Along the way, he also faces werewolves and other iconic creatures from classic Universal monster lore.
The film shines in its visual style, delivering grand set designs, dark fantasy aesthetics, and thrilling action sequences. Jackman brings a brooding intensity to the role, while Roxburgh’s Dracula is theatrical and campy. However, the film suffers from an overloaded plot, excessive CGI, and uneven pacing. While some fans appreciate its campy, adventurous tone, others feel it lacks the horror and depth expected from a Van Helsing story.
Despite its flaws, Van Helsing remains an entertaining popcorn flick for monster movie lovers, offering a unique blend of gothic horror and high-energy action.
