Plot Summary:
A campy, rebellious, and wildly entertaining rockabilly musical, Cry-Baby is a satirical tribute to the 1950s bad-boy romance genre, infused with John Waters’ signature offbeat humor.
Set in 1954 Baltimore, the film follows Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker (Johnny Depp), a charismatic, leather-clad “Drape” (greaser) known for his rebellious streak and his ability to shed a single, perfectly timed tear. Despite his tough exterior, he falls head-over-heels for Allison Vernon-Williams (Amy Locane), a prim and proper “Square” (rich good girl) who secretly longs for excitement.
As their forbidden love blossoms, Cry-Baby and his misfit gang—including Ricki Lake, Traci Lords, and punk icon Iggy Pop—find themselves at odds with the snobby, uptight Squares who want to keep them apart. When Cry-Baby is wrongfully imprisoned, his friends must band together for a rock ‘n’ roll-fueled fight for love, freedom, and self-expression.
With infectious rockabilly music, over-the-top performances, and a tongue-in-cheek attitude, Cry-Baby is a cult classic that showcases Johnny Depp’s breakout role and John Waters’ unique, rebellious vision of 1950s Americana.
